National Indigenous People’s Day

Celebrating Solstice Together –  National Indigenous Peoples Day in Mississippi Mills

National Indigenous Peoples Day is a time to recognize and honour the cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada. First declared in 1996, the date aligns with the summer solstice, a significant time of year for many Indigenous communities, symbolizing renewal, connection to the land, and the sharing of stories, songs, and ceremonies.

The solstice is celebrated by cultures around the world. While not all faiths have specific religious traditions tied to it, many recognize it as a time to appreciate the natural world and the changing seasons.

To mark this important day, Mississippi Mills All My Relations hosted a solstice community event, this time in partnership with Ginawaydagauc, Local Immigration Partnership and Mississippi Mills.  The celebration was held in honour of Elder William Commanda.  It began with a pancake breakfast sponsored by Ginawaydaganuc and a presentation about their project.  This was followed by a canoe trip led by Indigenous elders down the Mississippi River from Appleton to Riverfront Park and a celebration in the park including a BBQ.

All were encouraged to take part, reflect, and celebrate the rich heritage of Indigenous peoples and to appreciate their relationship to all of creation in the way of their own tradition.
